After months of speculation, the final decision has been made to move the Star Spangled Springfield and its fireworks display on the Fourth of July to a new location this year.

That’s because the event's usual spot is undergoing some construction.

The new location is Blunt Park and the city said that it's the ideal alternative.

"It’s a great area for viewing the fireworks. It's very large," said Spirit of Springfield President Judy Matt.

The Springfield Fourth of July fireworks spectacular are getting a change in venue.

"It was selected by the police and fire department as the safest place to have it in, where we can entertain the most people," Matt noted.

The Star Spangled Springfield fireworks celebration has been held at Riverfront Park for decades.

"This is a temporary move to Blunt Park. Because of all the economic development throughout the city, the riverfront is going through a rebirth," said Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno.

Construction will not be complete until September, so the city had no choice but to find an alternative spot for the display.

"It’s a new site for us, so we’re going to have our work cut out for us, but we’ll have officers on staff, which will include uniformed officers, plain clothes officers, K-9," said Springfield Police Deputy Chief Cheryl Clapprood

Public safety leaders are working out plans to make sure everyone has a safe and enjoyable experience.

"This is probably one of the better locations for us. It’s good because there are a lot of open areas. There are marked boundaries by woods and roads. It makes it a little easier to contain," Clapprood added.

This year’s event will take place on Wednesday, July 4 beginning at 7 p.m. Fireworks are scheduled to be launched around 9:30 p.m.
